I understand that the concentrate needs to be diluted with 1:1 water and that the ready-to-use sprayer just needs to be connected to a hose.

  • The reason I ask is I notice a huge difference between the two when cleaning mildew off my roof eaves.

However, the proprietary and inert ingredients are not listed on the product label for either formula.

How do I keep algae off my metal roof?

Install Metal Flashing – Another common and effective method of preventing algae growth on your roof is to install metal flashing. Metal flashing is typically used to seal areas around chimneys and roof vents, but it is also useful in reducing algae growth.

This is because the copper and zinc coating on galvanized sheet metal are toxic to algae. When it rains, trace amounts of metals are washed down the roof, inhibiting algae growth. To use metal flashing for algae growth prevention, install a strip of copper or zinc-coated sheet metal along each side of the roof, just below the ridge.

Ideally, two to four inches of metal should be visible on the roof. Narrow strips of sheet metal can be attached directly to the roof using roofing nails or screws with a rubber washer. For wider pieces of sheet metal, loosen the self-sealing tabs on the top row of shingles with a putty knife.

Slide part of the sheet metal under the shingles, and nail everything in place with roofing nails. (Obviously, working on the roof can be dangerous. If you feel at all unsafe installing your own flashing, please give us a call. Play it safe!) While copper is more effective in preventing algae growth, galvanized sheet metal is less expensive.

Both copper and galvanized metal are available in rolls of various widths and thicknesses. You can also purchase zinc strips specifically made to eliminate roof algae.

Application & Tips

Wet & Forget outdoor concentrate fill garden sprayer with water to
2 1/2 cups (20 oz.) 1 gallon mark
5 cups (40 oz.) 2 gallon mark

Application: Apply Wet & Forget Outdoor to a DRY outdoor surface until thoroughly saturated. Wet & Forget is best applied in cool, dry conditions to avoid evaporation. Do not use if rain is in the forecast within 4-5 hours. Avoid application during the warmest part of the day or hot days, to avoid evaporation which can diminish results.

  • Temperatures need to be above 32 degrees during application and for approximately 5 hours after.
  • Reaction Time: Once treated with Wet & Forget, green growths such as algae will clean up within a few days or weeks in most cases.
  • Black stains caused by mold and mildew can take a month, sometimes several months.

Worse-case scenario, heavy black stains that have built-up for many years can take six months – 1 year to come clean. Be Patient. Good Things Take Time. You’ll never have to wait for results after your first initial cleaning; you’ll move to an annual maintenance application to keep those surfaces mold-free.

Maintenance: Repeat application once a year or at the first sign of new moss, mold, mildew or algae growth. Treating Moss: To get rid of moss, thoroughly saturate the moss making sure the Wet & Forget Outdoor soaks through and comes in contact with the surface the moss has attached itself to. Over the next few days or weeks, you’ll notice the moss turning brown, curling up and detaching from the surface.

The wind and rain will help wash away any remaining moss. Treating Lichen: Lichen is a complex combination of fungus and algae that have learned to live together, forming a unique type of growth. Lichen can cause pitting on outdoor surfaces. The symbiotic relationship between the fungus and algae makes lichen very hardy and difficult to get rid of.

But don’t worry-even this robust growth is no match for Wet & Forget Outdoor. Use a garden sprayer to thoroughly saturate the lichen with a solution of 1 part Wet & Forget Outdoor and 5 parts water. Wait 15 minutes, and spray a second time. The outer shell will soften during this time so Wet & Forget can penetrate the lichen’s inner layer.

It is best to spray lichen on a day that is not too sunny, to prevent rapid evaporation and to allow Wet & Forget more time to work. Check out our or for additional information. Active Ingredients Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride 9.9% Where To Use Wet & Forget Outdoor Wet & Forget is non-acidic and contains no bleach; therefore it can be used on ANY outdoor surface material.

  1. Slide part of the sheet metal under the shingles, and nail everything in place with roofing nails.
  2. Obviously, working on the roof can be dangerous.
  3. If you feel at all unsafe installing your own flashing, please give us a call.
  4. Play it safe!) While copper is more effective in preventing algae growth, galvanized sheet metal is less expensive.

Both copper and galvanized metal are available in rolls of various widths and thicknesses. You can also purchase zinc strips specifically made to eliminate roof algae.
