What is the first step in creating a roof in Revit?
Transcript – To create a roof for the project, first open the level closely associated to the roof by double-clicking it in the Project Browser. Here, the Lower Parapet level will be used. Then, on the Architecture tab of the ribbon, click the Roof tool to enter sketch mode.
- Now you can select a tool from the Draw panel.
- In this case, you use the Pick walls tool to draw the edges of the roof at the building entry.
- This will be a sloped roof with an overhang.
- On the Options bar, set an overhang value of 600 and verify Defines slope is selected.
- Position the cursor near one of the walls at the entry.
A dashed line is shown indicating the overhang position of the roof. Press Tab to highlight the chain of walls and click to place the roof boundary. The triangle shape that displays near the lines indicates they will be a slope-defining edge of the roof.
The roof in this area is higher than the lower parapet. On the Properties palette, set the Base Level to 03 – Upper Parapet and click Finish to place the roof. To more easily create the flat roof of the building, additional walls must be visible in the view. The exterior walls of the building can be seen when an underlay is applied to the view.
On the Properties palette, set the underlay value to 01-Store Floor. This lets us see the walls from the 01 – Store Floor plan in our current view. Click Roof by footprint, and again Pick Walls is used as the drawing tool. This time on the Options bar, set the overhang value to 0 and clear the Defines slope setting.
In the Properties palette, set the Base Offset from Level parameter to -750. Now sketch the roof boundary, position the cursor near an exterior wall and press Tab to highlight the chain of walls. Click to place the sketch lines and finish the roof. Open a 3D view to see the resulting roof elements. You can see the interior walls extend through the flat roof.
To correct this, we will attach the walls to the roof. Select an interior wall and then right-click. From the contextual menu, choose Select all Instances, visible in view, to select all of the interior walls. On the contextual tab of the ribbon, select Attach and then select the flat roof.
What is the simplest roof design?

If you’re warned that the roof geometry cannot move, edit the roof sketch, and check for constraints on the sketch, such as between a level line and a sketch line of the roof.

Use this method to resize roofs that were created by footprint or by face.
- In an elevation or 3D view, select the roof.
- Drag the shape handle, as desired.
When editing the footprint of a roof, modify properties of its boundary lines to change the roof overhang.
- In sketch mode, select a boundary line for the roof.
- On the Properties palette, enter a value for Overhang.
- Click (Finish Edit Mode).
- Select the extruded roof, and click Modify | Roofs tab Opening panel (Vertical).
- If the Go to View dialog displays, select the appropriate plan view in which to edit the profile. A plan view representation of the roof displays. Reference planes define the boundary of the roof.

You can align roof ridges in 3D and elevation views. To align roof ridges in an elevation view, use the Align tool.
- In a plan view, add a reference plane:
- Click (Ref Plane).

- In the drawing area, sketch a reference plane that is not perpendicular to the roof ridges. Reference plane in plan view
- Select the reference plane, and on the Properties palette, enter a name for the plane.
- Click (Ref Plane).
- Open the 3D view, and click (Set).

- In the Work Plane dialog, select the reference plane name you just created, and click OK.

If a roof includes a slope-defining arc line or circle, it creates a conical roof. If desired, you can divide the arc or circle into segments as follows.
- In the drawing area, select the arc line.
- On the Properties palette, specify a value for Number of Full Segments. If you specify zero segments (the default), a conical roof is created.

To attach a truss
- Verify that roof and structural floor visibility is turned on in the current view.
- Select one or more trusses to attach.
- Click Modify | Structural Trusses tab Modify Truss panel (Attach Top/Bottom).
- On the Options Bar, select Attach Trusses: Top or Bottom for the appropriate truss chord being attached.
- Select the roof or structural floor.

Note: Not all truss families properly attach to a roof or structural floor. For the chord to conform to the shape of the corresponding roof or structural floor, the layout family’s chord sketch lines must coincide with the top reference plane. The roof/structural floor profile defines the transformation of the family’s reference plane, not the shape of the chord.
- Select the attached truss.
- Click Modify | Structural Trusses tab Modify Truss panel (Detach Top/Bottom).
- Select the roof or structural floor from which to detach.
- (Optional) Click Detach All on the Options Bar to detach top and bottom chords.
