One of the basic requirements to be observed is the expiration date and the storage period. The storage of cement is recommended for 30 days, which may increase this period by up to 60 days depending on weather conditions, as the expiration date is 90 days according to NBR 16,697.
Can we use cement after 6 months?
Cement is the first material that we think of when we want to build a house or any other structures. There are many construction materials which are used to construct a house or building but cement has a major role to play with respect to its life, strength and cost.

Due to the easy availability of raw materials, cement industries are growing day by day and the rate of consumption of cement also goes on increasing 11% annually in India and a similar rate globally. Fresh cement has many benefits. Fresh cement only leads to the good quality of construction which ultimately results into the longer service life of the building.
- But cement which is stored in godown for a longer duration, out dated cement or cement which is stored on site for a longer duration may lead to the poor quality of construction.
- Though the cement might be well protected in the cement godown, it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and over a period of time, cement loses its strength.
So, a million-dollar question is does cement loses its strength over a time? Yes, Cement loses its strength over a period of time. Cement is available in the form of a very fine powder and it has a tendency to absorb moisture from the atmosphere. When it absorbs moisture, it hydrates, and consequently the use of that cement does not contribute to the strength development or it contributes less. Not only atmospheric moisture affects the cement, but the water or dampness during the monsoon also deteriorates the cement when stored for longer period at site or in cement godown. In monsoon, cement will deteriorate early. But generally cement starts deteriorating after approximately three months.
- It is advisable to use cement within three months of its bagging.
- If usage of cement is required even after 3 months of its manufacturing then always check it by carry out different cement test.
- Proper arrangement therefore should be made in cement godown,
- Cement bought first should be used first.
- Generally, cement is bagged in Jute bags (gunny bags).
Jute bags are neither airtight nor damp-proof and also do not prevent absorption of moisture. Vice versa cement bagged in woven polythene or craft papers are not likely to deteriorate fast to the extent mentioned above. The loss of strength also depends on the condition of the godown.

2. Why the expiry date of cement is set for the 3months from the manufactured date? – Cement is a chemically active material that absorbs moisture from the air to undergo a chemical reaction known as hydration. When the cement gets hydrated in the bag, it reduces the strength of the cement.
This 20% strength reduction is within the safety standards that we consider while designing the RCC structures. So, the time limit for the expiry of the cement bag is set as 3 months from the manufactured date to maintain the safety & quality of the construction works.

How long can you keep cement bags?

Always separately wash clothes that may be splashed with cement-based products at the end of each day. A 20kg bag of cement based product requires 2 people to lift it safely. Manual handling of bagged products without due care and attention could result in personal injury.
Prior to handling it is recommended that appropriate consideration be given to the task. Where possible, all manual handling of bagged products should utilise load-shifting equipment, such as a wheelbarrow or trolley, or at a minimum be undertaken as a 2 person team lift. When loading a wheelbarrow, always place the bulk of the load over the wheel to lessen the effort required and reduce the strain on your back.
When lifting bagged products, both you and your team lift partner should protect your back – especially lifting bags in and out of your vehicle. Keep your lower back straight and use your leg muscles to lift, keeping your head up and do not pivot on your spine.
When lowering the product, use your leg muscles and don’t bend your back. If product gets into the eyes, irrigate the eyes with plenty of water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention. If any products are inhaled, vacate the dusty area immediately and seek medical attention if symptoms persist. If product comes into contact with skin, wash thoroughly with clean water.
Please refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for each product prior to use. Cements may cause respiratory, skin and eye irritation. Wet cement can be irritating and corrosive to the eyes and skin and may cause skin sensitisation (dermatitis). Repeated inhalation of the dust containing crystalline silica may cause bronchitis, silicosis (scarring of the lung) and lung cancer, and the risk of scleroderma.
Cementitious products are recommended to be stored indoors out of the weather and with the pallet wrap always maintained around the product. It is essential to ensure that stock of this product type is rotated with the oldest pallet always used first.
Once you’ve opened a bag of cement based product, it is recommended to use the contents that same day and discard any remaining product. If a cement based product appears to be hard then you need to dispose of the bag and source a fresh bag as it has likely been exposed to moisture and has reacted with the water.
If in doubt, please check the back of the bag as packaging suitable for recycling will be clearly marked with the recycling symbol.

The difference in those mixes has a direct effect on the lifespan of that concrete. That’s why it’s so important to plan ahead and get the right mix for your needs.
Weather and the environment are major factors when it comes to determining the lifespan of concrete. For example, a concrete floor that’s in the interior of a building is going to last decades longer than a concrete sidewalk that is outside and exposed to the elements. Of course, the weather is different depending on where you are.
If you live somewhere that experiences extreme temperatures, the lifespan of your concrete is going to be significantly less than in a more temperate environment. It is worth mentioning that there are concrete mixes out there that are specifically designed to withstand extreme weather.
If you do live in an area where that concrete is going to be exposed to various weather patterns, using the appropriate mix will substantially increase the lifespan of the final product.
